Fissures
Fissures are small grooves which occur in the back molars. Bacteria and plaque have a tendency to get stuck in these grooves, causing decay.
What is a Fissure Seal?
A fissure sealant is a material the dentist uses to cover the pits and grooves which have been eaten away by bacteria and plaque. This makes it easier to clean during brushing and food is less likely to get trapped easily. A fissure seal is recommended on children ages 6+ and generally the seals are placed on the molars.
The Dentist will:
- Clean and prepare the tooth surface with a bur and cleaning gel
- Place a bond on the area and cure it with a light
- Apply the liquid fissure sealant to seal the deep fissures
- Cure it with a light
- check your bite to ensure there are no high spots
- polish
